WED-C11: Nature, Elevated: Restoring Park Connections with Landscape on Structure

Central Park’s new Davis Center includes a 30,000-square-foot landscape on structure that goes beyond traditional green roof design. This biodiverse meadow and future woodland extend the park landscape over a recreation facility while navigating steep terrain. A trio of landscape architects will discuss designing and stewarding this thriving park space.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Apply techniques for creating a landscape on structure with varied topography and plant types, from canopy trees to native meadow zones.
  • Demonstrate the necessity of multi-disciplinary collaboration in managing challenges and constraints to bring a complex, atypical green roof project from concept to realization.
  • Maximize the value of the handover process from construction to maintenance and operations, setting up a project for long-term success while preserving design intent.
  • Learn how to adaptively manage a biodiverse planting through establishment and into long-term stewardship, with the additional challenges posed by specialized growth media and roof drainage systems.
