The Cumulus District/ VOX

An entire swath of West LA—low-slung, diverse in land use, and bound by vehicular activity—is emerging as a transit-rich, mixed-use community at the eastern edge of Culver City. Driven first by train and increasingly by bike and pedestrian traffic, mobility is unlocking redevelopment while cultivating identity and community.

Includes metro pass. Extensive walking.

Accessibility: This session includes walking in and around the Hayden Tract, where connectivity between sites may be limited and paving surfaces may be uneven.

Learning Outcomes:

• Discuss the evolution of LA Metro’s train, bike and first-last mile initiatives and how each relates to redevelopment policy.
• Analyze design considerations of street frontages including non-contiguous urban bike lanes that are not on the roadway and how they effect site circulation and connectivity.
• Identify active transportation strategies (and lessons learned) to spur retail offerings and movement patterns in a challenging urban condition.
• Learn how diverse land use is being repositioned to honor local ecology, provide jobs, encourage non-vehicular mobility, and anchor sense of place.
