Architectural & Technical Team Member Marmiro Stones Carlstadt, New Jersey
Most stone specification failures aren't installation problems they're decisions made six months earlier that nobody flagged. This session gives landscape architects the ASTM framework for evaluating natural stone, how to translate absorption, strength, and abrasion data into climate-specific go/no-go calls, and why texture is a performance decision before it's an aesthetic one vertical and horizontal applications demand different logic, even when the finish name is the same. You'll also walk away with a framework for telling which new finishes will age into timeless character and which will age into a maintenance problem. Leave able to read a stone spec sheet the way a structural engineer reads a beam calc.
Learning Outcomes:
Differentiate the performance characteristics of common natural stone materials used in landscape architecture.
Interpret industry testing standards and physical properties that influence material selection.
Select appropriate finishes, thicknesses, and detailing strategies for specific project conditions.
Develop specifications that improve durability, safety, and long-term project performance while reducing the likelihood of common installation failures.
