Water restrictions and shortages affect the long-term viability of urban trees, which take decades to reach maturity and to provide benefits to our environments. How much water do trees need to survive/thrive? It may be surprisingly much less than most water prescriptions because the water evaporates and runs off is not accounted. We will look at case studies of saving 90+% water usage during droughts and water restrictions by reducing wastes and losses. The main goal is to provide methods to keep trees alive and thrive during water restrictions and shortages without breaking water restriction rules or paying fines. It also enhances water conservation.
Learning Outcomes:
Learn the importance of trees to the quality of life in communities, the specific benefits, and the timeline it takes for tree canopies to provide these benefits
Learn what do trees typically experience in built environment and what trees need to survive and thrive in this environment. We will use case studies from around the country to showcase.
Learn the differences in water prescriptions for trees, what that means to trees, especially newly planted trees before they are established.
Learn from a few case studies across the United States on how to keep trees alive and to allow them thrive while not getting caught violating the water restriction policies.
