Who is being excluded? This is the question to consider when creating inclusive outdoor recreation experiences for everyone to enjoy. The process must start early in the planning, designing, and programming of these destinations. Ensuring inclusion, regardless of age or ability, to independently participate in a wide range of recreation facilities is a critical priority to ensure people of all abilities reap the health benefits of intergenerational play. This session will go beyond the minimums of the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design and the requirements for outdoor recreation facilities, including considerations for site arrival, surfacing, amenities, play areas, and more! Attendees will develop a better understanding of the features of the built environment that foster a sense of community and belonging.
Learning Outcomes:
Outline at least two minimum standards for accessible play areas required under the 2010 ADA Standards.
List at least three key requirements to create accessible routes to and within play and recreation destinations.
Evaluate a variety of park amenities and identify barriers that may restrict people with disabilities from fully participating in the provided recreational opportunities.
Identify two helpful resources to obtain additional information or to utilize when evaluating new and existing play and recreation environments.
