As the urgency to provide access to green open space in dense urban neighborhoods increases, more parks are being constructed on structure—over buildings, highways, and bridges. This session explores these projects’ technical challenges and a range of strategies for designing and engineering public open space on new and existing structures.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Learn about the challenges of parks constructed on existing structures, and review innovative approaches to address structural limitations associated with re-development.
  • Explore how a collaborative multi-disciplinary process can achieve an integrated system that addresses both structural requirements and landscape needs.
  • Understand how project design extends beyond documentation, requiring an adaptable approach that allows for responsive design solutions to structural challenges that emerge during construction.
  • Evaluate how different project delivery methods, contract document structures, and phased construction can influence landscape design on structure.
