Steven Handel, former Visiting Professor of Ecology at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design, studies the restoration ecology of urban and degraded habitats and how this can mesh with landscape architecture design. He was Editor of the journal Ecological Restoration. He is a Fellow of the Ecological Society of America and in 2023 was named the Distinguished Fellow of the Botanical Society of America. Awards include the Theodore Sperry Award from the Society of Ecological Restoration, the ASLA LaGasse Medal for his ecological research on habitat restoration, and he twice received ASLA’s national Honor Award in Research.
