Founder
Lehrer Architects LA
Michael B. Lehrer, FAIA, founded Lehrer Architects LA in his native district of Los Feliz in Los Angeles in 1985. His work, from the intimate to the monumental, is grounded in the idea that beauty is a rudiment of human dignity. He designs for community with a reverence for light and space. Delight is a matter of extreme gravitas in the work. Lehrer Architects’ approach to design grows out of a deep love and respect for the community and unwavering focus on its improvement. Michael Lehrer has developed a unique relationship with the architect’s communal role as a leader and using design to improve quality of space and quality of life. Los Angeles, a deeply non-judgmental and open city of seamless indoor/outdoor living and being, is at the core of Michael’s architecture and worldview. For him, architecture is optimism. Lehrer Architects LA is steeped in the nurturing of creativity culture in its own work - both process and product - and in finding that spark in all of its clients’ endeavors. Its professional team brings expertise in designing, managing, master planning, and collaborating with diverse clients and projects throughout Los Angeles and beyond, emphasizing a passion for making places that get built and that touch the soul. Its design approach breathes vitality and delight into the spaces it creates. Whether projects are commercial, residential, or institutional, public, or private, the practice focuses on the making of home and community, from individual to family to neighborhood to city, creating spaces that sanctify the rituals of life. AIA LA Angeles bestowed the Gold Medal on Michael in 2020. Lehrer Architects LA has won 160 major design and sustainability awards, including 60 design awards from the national, state, and local chapters of The American Institute of Architects.
