John King wrote extensively about parks, plazas and public spaces at the San Francisco Chronicle before retiring in 2024 after 23 years as the paper’s Urban Design Critic. A two-time finalist for the Pulitizer Prize in Criticism, he also has written for such publications as Landscape Architecture Magazine, Architectural Record, American Scholar and Bloomberg Citylab. His 2023 book Portal: San Francisco’s Ferry Building and the Reinvention of American Cities (W.W. Norton) was a New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice. He lives in the San Francisco Bay Area and is an honorary member of the ASLA.
