The benefit of topography for play is well established; over the years some advocates have even called for a minimum provision of mounds and play berms within a play environment. This session will encourage landscape architects to think critically about slope design within their play-spaces. In reflecting on the considerations to guide slope design, we will look at historic use of slopes in play environments by landscape architects from Cornelia Hahn Oberlander to M. Paul Friedburg; we will also review the materiality and manifestations of slopes today. The session will highlight current conversations pertaining to slopes in play areas currently underway at the ASTM standard committee that determines the industry standard for playground equipment design.
Learning Outcomes:
Discover the play value of slopes and how/when to use them in play environments.
Consider the pros and cons of different surfacing options.
Recognize situations in which slopes will have an impact on other stakeholders, including play-space owners, maintenance teams, and equipment manufacturers.
Understand the process for participation in the ASTM playground safety committee’s deliberations and voting on issues that impact professional landscape architects.
