Designing a Splash Pad for Inclusion and Safety provides landscape architects and parks and recreation professionals with a comprehensive understanding of how aquatic play supports community health, learning, and engagement. The course examines the physical and mental wellness benefits of water play, the developmental ways patrons interact with water, and the specific user groups served by different types of aquatic play experiences. Participants will learn how to apply three core design principles- accessibility, universality, and inclusivity- to create splash pads that welcome and support users of all ages and abilities.
Learning Outcomes:
Analyze user needs and determine appropriate water play features that support inclusive design, ensuring equitable access and engagement for patrons of all ages and abilities.
Evaluate and select hydraulic system components that meet public health and safety standards, reducing waterborne risks and improving operational reliability.
Apply research on sensory development and physical wellness to inform evidence-based splash pad layouts that stimulate cognitive, social, and motor skill growth.
Assess site amenity requirements, including shade, supervision zones, circulation needs, and seating, to design aquatic play environments that promote user comfort, safety, and well-being.
