In 2022, Shoreline, WA residents voted to improve eight parks simultaneously using the Progressive Design-Build delivery method. With five complete, the Client, Contractor, and Design team discuss advantages—material re-use, shared design vocabulary—and challenges, including the complexity of managing eight concurrent projects in this increasingly popular delivery method.

Learning Outcomes:

Describe progressive design-build delivery and how it differs from traditional design-build and design-bid-build methods from the perspectives of the project client, designer, and contractor.
Evaluate the benefits and challenges of bundled projects, including streamlined specifications and detailing, material reuse, overlapping deliverables, and overburdened review time.
Incorporate community engagement within the accelerated timeline of the design-build process.
Demonstrate how sustained relationships between the client, designer, and contractor facilitate a shared design language and better understanding of expectations, roles, and responsibilities.
