FRI-C06: How Urban Parks Can Transform Cities and Connect People with Cultural History

Abolitionist Place is a case study for how design can foster diversity and inclusion. It serves a highly diverse, rapidly growing Brooklyn neighborhood and supports all—from office workers to children from the nearby schools. The park features art that recognizes the site’s significance within the Underground Railroad movement.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Hear how downtown Brooklyn is being transformed by new uses and the public realm and learn how the New York City Economic Development Corporation and Downtown Brooklyn Partnership create projects.
  • See how cultural history can be embodied in the design and art for urban public spaces.
  • Learn how small urban spaces can meet diverse needs and create a welcoming and inclusive environment.
  • Hear how challenging site conditions—in this case discovered during construction—can be addressed and incorporated.
