Offset your carbon emissions through ASLA partner, National Indian Carbon Coalition.
ASLA has partnered with the National Indian Carbon Coalition (NICC), an Indigenous carbon innovator, working with the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians in Mississippi to preserve and improve Tribal Forests. This partnership supports the cultural empowerment and climate equity goals outlined in the ASLA Climate Action Plan and promotes natural climate solutions through Improved Forest Management. 100% of contributions will be used to purchase third-party verified offsets from NICC, registered with the American Carbon Registry.
The lead sponsor of the ASLA 2025 Conference carbon offset program is KOMPAN.
Deeper collaboration between landscape architects and industry partners is key to achieving ASLA Climate Action Plan and biodiversity goals.
To support that collaboration, the ASLA Corporate Member Committee and Climate Action Committees have produced this guide for landscape architects. It is meant to inform conversations with industry partners and offers a range of questions to ask.
In the ASLA EXPO, you can use this guide to talk to industry partners about ways to advance collective climate and biodiversity goals.
The new ASLA Climate and Biodiversity Action Plan for 2026-2030 will be released at the ASLA 2025 Conference. It builds on the ASLA Climate Action Plan for 2022-2025 and charts a pathway for landscape architects to achieve zero greenhouse gas emissions in their projects and operations and increase carbon sequestration by 2040. ASLA has established short-term and long-term objectives to improve the sustainability of its ASLA Conference on Landscape Architecture and EXPO. These objectives seek to reduce the environmental impacts of the event while advancing the Climate and Biodiversity Action Plan and aligning with the values of the landscape architecture community.
Partnership is key to becoming more sustainable, and we couldn’t do what we do without the support of our attendees, our exhibitors, partners like Honeycomb Strategies, the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, Freeman, and other key vendors to make the Conference on Landscape Architecture environmentally sustainable.
ASLA's organizational partners, product suppliers, and venues play an important role in this effort. Together we work to ensure that all print materials, signage, decorations and equipment are recycled and/or recyclable, and that almost all handouts are distributed electronically. In a new effort in support of our commitment to sustainability, ASLA will not have a printed conference brochure on site. Instead, you'll find everything you need on our conference app.
Commit to reducing your impact at ASLA by joining the Exhibitor Sustainability Pledge.
Simple actions like waste reduction, water and energy conservation, and sustainable procurement can have a big impact when multiplied across exhibitors. Be sure to consult with Freeman on your expo and booth materials and logistics.
Freeman has a commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50 percent by 2030 and achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050. With both an ISO 14001 and ISO 20121 certification, Freeman is there to help guide you through sustainable offerings while at ASLA.
Exhibitor Pack In / Pack Out Policy
Exhibitors are expected to pack in and pack out large, reusable items to ensure they are kept out of the landfill.
In October 2022, the U.S. Green Building Council awarded the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center a Gold-level Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification, a designation that recognizes highly efficient, green buildings.
Following major building upgrades and green initiatives, the convention center is now the largest LEED-certified project in Louisiana and the first convention center in the world to be awarded initial certification under LEED v4.1 O+M.
Key sustainability efforts at the New Orleans Convention Center include:
Energy Efficiency: Upgrades, such as energy-efficient LED lighting and high-efficiency HVAC systems, have been implemented to reduce energy consumption. The convention center has replaced1.9 million square feet of traditional roofing with an energy-efficient "cool roof" system that contributes to significant energy savings.
Waste Management: The convention center has expanded its recycling program, offering accessible recycling stations and dedicated collection areas for materials like cardboard, metal, pallets, and plastic. The food service provider composts organic kitchen waste, and most service ware is biodegradable and plastic-free.
Green Spaces: A new 7.5-acre pedestrian park features 200 trees and rain gardens to manage stormwater effectively and enhance the public realm.
Food and Water: The convention center regularly donates food to local organizations. Over 80 water bottle filling stations throughout the convention center have already saved the equivalent of more than 300,000 plastic water bottles from landfills.
