ASLA/ACE Mentor Legacy Project
In 2008, ASLA introduced the Legacy Project as a gift to the host city of the annual conference. The host chapter teams up with the local affiliate of the ACE Mentor Program to design a project to be installed after the meeting. Many EXPO exhibitors donate products and plants each year for the project, allowing ASLA to give back to the city that hosts the meeting.

This year, the team in San Diego has decided to move forward with EarthLab as our site for the Legacy Project. EarthLab is an outdoor climate action park serving over 3000 students and their families each year. Working with cutting edge education and climate leaders regionally and beyond, EarthLab advances a new model of experiential education, technical training, and mentoring to activate the unparalleled potential of these underserved communities.
Currently, the leadership at EarthLab is preparing their next phase of development which will consist of creating a new primary entry way and gathering space to expand part of their services to the public.
ASLA’s support of this hands-on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, math) educational project is under the co-chair leadership team of Trista Silvia of StudioWC and Jaime Sandoval of Estrada Land Planning, both members of the ASLA San Diego Chapter. They are joined in this endeavor by the ACE Mentor Program San Diego – which corrals high school students with aspirations to architecture, construction and engineering careers – which helped design EarthLab. Leading on the ground in San Diego with ACE are Mark Moss of the Schmidt Design Group (board vice chair) and Jacob Leon at KTU&A (San Diego High School team leader).
ASLA EXPO exhibitors generously donate products and plants each year for the project, allowing ASLA to give back to the city that hosts the meeting. For information on how to assist with or donate to this project, visit or stop by the San Diego Host Chapter Booth in the registration area during the conference. ASLA EXPO Exhibitors
This is an all-volunteer led project and, as in year’s past, support is needed from ASLA EXPO exhibitors. Exhibitors can pledge donations either before or during the 2019 ASLA Conference on Landscape Architecture. Whether you sign-up in advance or onsite, you will be required to pick-up labels from the exhibitors lounge and label donation items in your booth.
Following the show’s closing, Freeman will collect all labeled items for donations. Details will be available in a confirmation email that you will receive once you complete the online donation form.
Unfortunately we cannot accept live plants. Please check with your tax advisor for tax deduction eligibility and opportunities.
