2017 ASLA/ACE Mentor Legacy Project
Santee High School

In 2008, ASLA introduced the Legacy Project as a gift to the host city of the annual meeting and EXPO. The host chapter teams up with the local affiliate of the ACE Mentor Program to design a project to be installed after the meeting. Many EXPO exhibitors donate products and plants each year for the project, allowing ASLA to give back to the city that hosts the meeting.

The 2017 ASLA/ACE Legacy project is dedicated to actualize academic enrichment and family bonds at an inner city high school in downtown Los Angeles. Santee Education Complex with an enrollment of over 1800 students is the Legacy Project site for the 2017 convention. This year’s project welcomed the Los Angeles League of Arts as an additional partner to the process. An interactive design collaboration with students at Santee, fellow professionals, and landscape architecture students from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo has been underway throughout the year. The framework for the design was created through community workshops utilizing brain storming sessions and focus groups. The space is being reshaped to better accommodate academic endeavors and facilitate social enrichment.

Building off the celebrated academic success at Santee, new programming and design features have been envisioned for the linear central plaza of the campus. Features and amenities suggested by students helped direct and inform decision making. The proposed design supplements a planned aquaponics garden in the plaza advancing the school’s mission. New seating, dining, and activity spaces will replace under-utilized concrete paving.  Sustainable practices and technology have directed design decisions throughout the process. Collaborative art installation opportunities throughout the space will enrich the sense of school community, and perpetuate the Legacy experience into the future. The new vision for the central plaza at Santee Education Complex proudly contributes to ASLA’s tradition of “Legacy” in the convention host city.
